“The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses………behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.” Muhammad Ali - I love this one because it appeals to my need to be well prepared and trained, and who am I to argue with Mr Ali.

“Quit Bitching” Lance Armstrong - ’nuff said really

“An athlete cannot run with money in his pockets. He must run with hope in his heart and dreams in his head.” Emil Zatopek - my hopes and dreams are what spur me

“The finish line is sometimes merely the symbol of victory. All sorts of personal triumphs take place before that point, and the outcome of the race may actually be decided long before the end.” Laurence Malone - Don’t know who this guy is but I found it on the web, harking back to Mr Ali’s quote, it is what you do to get to the start line the matters the most.

“Never let a win get to your head, or a loss to your heart.” Public Enemy He Got Game

“The will to win means nothing without the will to prepare.” Juma Ikangaa, Tanzania - here we go again, I am obsessed with preparation

“Run hard, be strong, think big!” Percy Cerutty

“If someone says, ‘Hey, I ran 100 miles this week. How far did you run?’ ignore him! What the hell difference does it make?…. The magic is in the man, not the 100 miles.” Bill Bowerman - or the woman Bill, but I get what you mean.

“Those who say that I will lose and am finished will have to run over my body to beat me.” Said Aouita - MAGIC

“The marathon’s about being in contention over the last 10K. That’s when it’s about what you have in your core. You have run all the strength, all the superficial fitness out of yourself, and it really comes down to what’s left inside you. To be able to draw deep and pull something out of yourself is one of the most tremendous things about the marathon.” Rob de Castella

  1. Em, great idea - mind if I steal it and do something similar (I’ve been setting up a blog too - to be launched in 2007 - yes, Monday). I’ve been tracking the figures above for myself for about 18 months now, and have actually set some of my 2007 goals around maintaining weight and BF% - so including a page like this on my blog might keep me honest too !
