That seems logical, in hindsight

Sorry folks, no social commentary and ranting today ;-)

I had an appointment with my Podiatrist today, my orthotics were desperately in need of a retread, they have certainly been put through their paces these last couple of months.

We had a chat about the nasty blisters I acquired last Sunday, now here’s the thing, my orthotics were cutomised for my running gait, not for walking.

Der Fred I hear you all say and yes, in hindsight that makes a hell of a lot of sense and by the next day I had realised this but it just didn’t cross my mind at the time. The orthotics are built up quite a bit in the heel and the arch is high, but because I midfoot strike when running they don’t rub, but switch to walking where I heel strike and yep, blisters!

The Pod told me to go and buy something called Friar’s Balsam and start applying it to the blisters right away and keep doing this right up to Trailwalker, apparently this is going to toughen the skin up. The strategy for the event and the remaining training leading up is to carry a pair of normal insoles with me and when we hit a significant stretch of walking, like when we are walking through the hills I need to swap out the orthotics for normal insoles. She also advised changing socks at every checkpoint, lucky I have many many many pairs of socks. Finally, I was also given a little stash of sterile scalpel blades after I told her than I lanced my blisters on the go with a swiss army knife, she was a wee bit alarmed by that

We are having a heatwave in Melbourne at the moment, 40 yesterday and 39 today, needless to say it was run this morning or not at all. Despite doing a passable impression of a Zombie I managed to drag myself out of bed just past 5am and get into the city for an early hit out. The ever present and iconic Nylex Clock told me that it was already 28 degrees at 06:18, fortunately I was finished before the sun was fully up and the humidity was quite low so it was a fairly comfortable 5:13 pace 8km.

Ahhh, how good does a Friday feel when you have a whole week and a day off work, even if it isn’t going to be the most relaxed time with my sister’s wedding next weekend.

Think it is time for another glass of wine :-)
