Sorry

Regardless of who you voted for in last years Federal Election it was a significant moment in our history to witness the Governments official apology to the stolen generation this morning.

When I was a callow youth I used to have the view that well, I didn’t do it so therefore I don’t want anyone apologising on my behalf thankyou very much.

But I have become wiser (mostly) and have since changed my position. My family, on both sides, have been in Australia since almost the beginning of British Colonisation as mostly Convicts on both sides (I can’t walk past a Baker’s Delight without getting itchy fingers). I do feel a sense of loss, anger and disconnection from my Celtic culture as a result of this, but really, who the hell am I to complain, I lead a charmed life. No doubt my ancestors had a hell of a time on the way out here as prisoners, especially as they were mostly petty criminals of Irish and Cornish decent. I am still waiting for my apology from the British government for the antics of Oliver Cromwell, but hey I am not holding my breath and I sleep OK at night without it. More to the point I can not know how my forebears behaved after they did their time and were turned loose. Mum has done the family history on her side but I would have to be wearing a pretty powerful pair of rose coloured glasses if I believed they were all saint like and compassionate people who never did wrong by an Aboringinal.

In spite of how my family ended up here the fact is that no matter what hardships and privations the early brethren may have suffered I have gotten on just fine in life. Although my parents were far from people of means I was still well educated, had access to health care, was well fed and clothed and never lived in fear of being removed from my family home.

So I was glad today to see some human decency and compassion from our Government, my heart now can only hope that actions will now speak louder and there will be real and genuine effort made to ensure Indigenous Australians have access to the same opportunities and standards of living that I was privileged to have growing up.

That’s my 2 cents.

Running
An easy 5.4km or thereabouts as run leader for the medium group. One of those perfect session with a small bunch of 5 who were all very chatty and better still ran together as a group, good vibes all around :-)
