I have a confession to make……

….I snuck off to a 5Km fun run this morning, the Sussan Women’s Fun Run and damn it was hot and windy out there today. I entered about 10 days ago and at the time was feeling confident of bettering my 18 month old PB for the distance (22:56). But this morning it became pretty apparent that the conditions were not in my favour, the course was Beaconsfield Parade along the Bay, did I mention it was hot and windy

Sadly not even a tail wind at the turn around it was one of those swirly all over the place winds, I even ran in a crop top today and you all know that is not like me.

Anyway, brief race report, no splits because there were no Km markers  I know! unheard of! so I just ran and tried not to die, in the end it was really about survival. I was able to overtake a heap of other runners, even girls who looked more capable than me and until the last 300 metres was not overtaken myself.

So what happened in the last 300 metres? The damn stomach cramp came back, I haven’t been bothered by it since returning from injury but it was back with avengence today. I am now convinced there is a physiological reason because I was not at all nervous, in fact I was really relaxed because hardly anyone knew I was running today, it was probably just the conditions. It was pretty embarrassing doubling over in the finish chute but the crowd was really cool and supportive, though I was pissed off to loose 2 places overall as a result. I walked it out and managed a good sprint to the finish, I think the whole thing cost me about 30 seconds.

I also had the unusual experience of running pretty much on my own. I passed quite a few at the start and by about 3Km found myself all alone without anyone on my heels. Again the crowd was really cool and there we alot of people out there cheering and offering encouragement. I reckon if I had have slowed at a drink station about 1Km from the finish and had a drink I would have finished without the stomach problem, I had the lee way to get away with it.

Ok, so here is the time, please be kind 24:51  2 minutes slower than my PB.

But even the winner did it in 19:00 so everyone was doing it tough out there today.

But hey, I managed a 2nd placing for my age group (30-34) so it wasn’t all bad, and a race is a race and is always a learning experience.

30-34
Pos Name Race No Gender Time Overall Pos
1 Rayka BOR 5552 Female 00:24:32 26
2 Emma WILTON 5565 Female 00:24:50 31
3 Tracey KUCHEL 5556 Female 00:25:35 49

Apparently I’ll be getting a trophy in the mail, cool :-)

This was the first time I have entered a Supersprint event and I was very impressed. Fantastic showbag and very well organised, I barely queued for more then 1 minute for anything. Number and timing chip pick up was a breeze, stacks of portaloos (always important) and bag drop off and pick was also hassle free. They also had start zones, I was in the sub 30 minute zone this meant no walkers to battle through and they also started the prams 5 minutes after the main wave, brilliant idea and I had a perfectly clear run for the get go. My only feedback is that there should have been KM markers and a clock at the finish line.

One more thing, dodgy sight for the day, a group of 4 girls entered in the 5Km walk sitting around having a pre event cigarette, honestly what a pack of idiots!
