Rest day today.
The path lab is getting quicker every time, my test results came though after lunch today. My iron levels have dropped again, I have only been off the supplements for 6 weeks but being an athlete and not eating red meat I guess I will always struggle to keep them up naturally. I was given the choice of an injection or back on the supplements, it was a hassle to get back to the Doc so tablets again every night before bed. Fortunately they didn’t upset my tummy like I thought they would so I am not fussed, I guess while I am running they will always be a feature.
I have just watched an interview with Jimmy Barnes on Channel 2. While not a fan of his music in particular I can say I am a fan of the “man”, you can’t help but love him, he is very self deprecating and endearing and if I see him on TV I’ll always stop and listen. I am happy to admit though that Flame Trees is in my list of favourite songs, it was before my time but I love it.
For some reason today I had the Billie Holiday song Strange Fruit rolling about in my head (which may explain the mood). A few months ago I head a cover on JJJs Like a Version that nearly had my pulling the car of the road, it was so incredibly well done and the imagery of the lyrics is breathtakingly heart rending.
Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh. Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.
Life ‘aint so bad when you reflect on what others have and do have to bear.
