Is this my fitness returning?

Filed under: Uncategorized — emruns @ 7:33 pm

Itchy skin, sore nose and red eyes, must mean I was back in the pool today.

5 minutes warm up
3 sets of 8 by 90 seconds hard with 20 second recovery and 90 seconds between sets
5 minutes cool down

I have noticed over the last couple of pool sessions that it is getting harder to get my heart rate up this is why I reduced the recovery time between reps and sets today. I am hoping that this is signaling a return of my CV fitness now that I am getting back into real running.

Perhaps out of a desire not to jinx myself I haven’t mentioned how my legs have been feeling. I am have been proceeding cautiously and have been prepared to pull the pin on a session as soon as I feel pain or to skip a session if I don’t feel ready. I have been surprised that so far everything is going along nicely, though I know I have to continue to be patient and that there is still a long road to travel along. I have only done 3 runs of 5.5Km in the orthoses but they have been treating me well. I have been putting on the ice packs after every run and every night I am spending about 15 minutes massaging my shins. This has been great as I was told to start this after my first appointment, it has given me a great feel for what is right and wrong. When I was first injured my shins felt like corrugated iron they were so messed up, now they are nice and smooth and there is just a little lump on my left shin where the injury was the worst and this is getting smaller every day.

I just checked the results for the Mens 12Km Cross Country on Saturday, Steve Monaghetti came 4th only 24 seconds behind the winner, as well as blitzing the O40 field, incredible!

Hmmm, allow me to be just a wee bit pervy for a moment will you  I started reading the Steve Ovett and Seb Coe book today, in the middle there are heaps of great photos, you have to agree that there are very few forms more perfect than this (apart from the great Buster of course)

Hey, haven’t had a rant for a while
Ohh, I got a good rant going on Sunday when I was driving out to my Mum’s, and over something so trivial too

I hate, with a burning passion those stupid petrol powered garden blower thingies. Why spend a quiet relaxed afternoon in the garden enjoying the peace and fresh air when you can foul it up with an obnoxious noise and toxic fumes, hey why not back the car up and turn that on as well, while you’re at it light a cigar and chuck some tires on the fire. BUY A FECKING RAKE AND A BROOM YOU LAZY PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!

Seriously if you have gotten to the point where you can’t even rake some leaves it is time to re-asses your fitness levels.

And on the topic of useless household appliances, can you believe you can buy a mini Fairy Floss maker, save yourself the $59.95 and eat a bag of sugar.

What is the world coming to?

  1. Sounds like the CV fitness could be returning! Good to hear you think the legs are coming good, after your dedicated and determined and patient recovery you deserve that.

Agree with the rant too by the way, they are so friggin noisy those blower things. I swept my driveway this morning, with a broom, and it was actually quite relaxing.

  3. Glad to hear that you’re progressing so well Em. You so completely deserve it.

I hate those blowers too. In the Canberra City Centre (I’d say CBD but that would be overstating the case) the blowers are used out on the streets, particularly in autumn. Apart from the noise, the dust they blow up is a real nuisance too.

  4. Fingers crossed on the fitness and legs.

I said the same thing when I saw those fairy floss machines. I can understand stuff like popcorn machines cos that’s a relatively healthy snack but fairy floss…

  6. You would have to be the most patient person I know Em. I am already straining at the leash to just run a little bit, but I know that it’s going to be 6 weeks before I’ll be able to even think about it.

The Doc did mention swimming though  I know that I should take the plunge (ha ha) and just get down to the pool and do it, but it’s such a hassle. I did start to enjoy it when I was doing it regularly in the UK, and I know that all I need to do is just get in the habit of getting out there and doing it, but did I tell you it’s just such a hassle

We have one of those blower vacs, which I’ve never used. I also haven’t used the rake and broom, which is why all the leaves are in a slimy gooey mess along our driveway

  7. A bit late, but thanks for the cheers on Saturday. You picked a better spot than at Geelong :) Mona is a freak… he ran past me like I was running backwards. Good to hear you’re slowly getting back into the running.

Don’t get me started on the tory when someone was using a petrol garden blower and blew crap all over my then new, just washed car!

  9. Who are these people with their leaf blowers- everyone I know hates them- where do they hide? They just blow all the rubbish into the gutters to end up in the bay too- nasty evil noisy litterbugs they are.
Glad you are back running again!
