The countdown begins, 14 days to go

Yep, back to the Doc today.

*sigh* where to start?

I still have another 2 weeks off, but if I am honest I was expecting that, of course part of me was hoping for better news but it wasn’t to be. When I was first diagnosed I was expecting 6 weeks off though, and 6 weeks it will be.

I had to hop up and down on one foot again, on each side. Absolutely no pain or discomfort at all, I also got to run up and down on the spot, my first running experience in weeks  ,again no pain or discomfort. Quite a bit of poking and digging around in the shins, most of the tenderness has gone completely, though the Doc said there was still a fair bit of scar tissue and a bit of swelling. Unfortunately I had to miss my scheduled massage appointment last night, so I have to try and book another one now, it has been recommended that I have them weekly for a little while, to help break up the scar tissue. The majority of the swelling and stuff from the shin splints has gone though.

I also need to keep up the self massage but apparently need to work at it much harder. I was going “easy” on myself because I was worried about doing some damage, unfounded fear apparently, I can dig in there as hard as I like. Thing is I have pretty skinny little legs below the knee and I can really feel the bone when I massage there, it is a bit off putting. I got to see my scans so I know exactly where the stressies are, again, can honestly say I wasn’t feeling pain at those sites. I was asking about why I couldn’t feel a definite Hot Spot, even when I first visited the Doc and she was having a good prod there was no definite location of pain. Also asked why I felt pain in the calves and not the shins, and why the discomfort was worse in the leg (right) where the stressie was less severe. Turns out my body, like my brain, is just not very good at communicating, preferring instead to keep things to itself, I would have listened to it, it just wasn’t talking

One thing did console me though, even the good Doc, who you would expect to be in the best position to know better, has had Stress Fractures.

And at least I have some definites now, I have another appointment already booked for Thursday 21st June (13 days to go!). First up I will be seeing a Podiatrist for an hour, where I have to bring all my trainers and racers and street shoes (I will need a big bag), then back to the Doc. She told me today “I fully expect to be writing you a run/walk program when I see you in 2 weeks” :-)

Lucky I am posting now, because about 2 hours ago I was having a major slump, but someone gave me a “talking” to and put things back in perspective ;-)

Anyway, others have been out longer than me already and others may still be out when I get back, so no need to be a selfish little kid about it.

I did have a shocking day today, but mainly because I was having some really bad cramps today (T.O.M), making me realise how much running did do for me, because normally a good run helps them go away. So this just set me off into another sook this afternoon.

Enough now, I will not dwell further, trust me, this post could have been pretty dire and self indulgent, I was not a happy camper a short while ago.

The Plan……

  • Back to the pool tomorrow, yes I lost a few days, can’t get them back, only thing for it is to keep moving forward.
  • Yep, Geelong and Coliban are out (really spewing about Coliban, was especially looking forward to that one) but looking at the time table the XC at Bundoora late July should be a definite, Division 4 here I come :-)
  • Keep up that core work. There is a definite improvement (pity there is still too much insulation in the way), I will master the plank by the time I am better
  • Goodness, how could I forget, I had the dreaded Dry Needling again, aghhhhhhh, it bloody hurt, but not as badly as it did last time, this time I just laid back and didn’t look, wringing my hands like I do at the Dentist to distract myself. And I have another course of the hard core anti-inflams to help take care of the last of the swelling.

    I am almost back………….
